The History of Pearson

Family Farm

The Pearson family has been in Trego county for 145 years. In 1879, Swen Pearson homesteaded in the county shortly after the town of Wakeeney was sited. Swen worked on the railroad to provide for his family and raised animals for their livelihood. The farm expanded over the next couple generations to include cash crop production and a small cattle herd.

In the 1960’s a 480 acre farm (Green Valley Ranch) was purchased 2 miles Southwest of Wakeeney that included a working farm and farm ground and pasture. In the late 60’s and 70’s, water rights were established and irrigation systems were installed on the farm. The farm continued to expand and the operation included crop production, cattle, hogs, and sheep. A migration to “no-till” farming began in the last 70’s and the farm continued to expand with majority cop production with nearly 2000 acres of land in production. Some fruits, vegetables, and landscape trees started to be grown in the late 80’s and 90’s.

In 2021, a portion of the farm began implementing regenerative farming concepts and specialty seed was raised for regenerative farming along with some specialty crops. In 2025, under the leadership of the 5th and 6th generations of the Pearson family, there will be a transition to full regenerative farming for optimizing soil health, crop grazing production, and supporting specialty beef production. In addition, agritourism concepts will be implemented throughout the farm.
